Restorative Yoga & Weight Loss
A few weeks ago I left my laptop and smart phone in a drawer at home and headed to Silver Birch Ranch for some restoration. The pace at this northern woods camp is flexible & easy, while providing plenty of opportunities for fun. The family camp also has wonderful opportunities for spiritual restoration such as morning chapel services and a little personal prayer chapel in the woods campers can reserve for quiet time.
You may have noticed I load mostly restorative poses to this page for prayer and Scripture meditation purposes, and I decided to really focus on a daily restorative yoga practice during this vacation.
Did you know that restorative yoga can not only energize our day by offering better rest and give benefits of headache relief, stress reduction, disease prevention but it's an effective weight loss tool?
Gail Boorstein Grossman in "Restorative Yoga for Life" says that "when cortisol production is lowered, the amount of glucose in the body is likewise decreased. Glucose creates fat, especially belly fat, which can lead to other diseases as well. If you reduce stress, you reduce cortisol and then glucose which leads to weight loss."
Yoga Journal says this in April 2017: A study led by researcher Maria G. Araneta, PhD, MPH, of the University of California, San Diego, found that restorative yoga also helps people lose subcutaneous fat. The study, which took place over 48 weeks, included two groups of people: "one that performed a routine of simple stretching exercises and another that took part in a restorative yoga routine. Both groups lost weight, but the restorative yoga group lost almost twice as much in the first six months, and they were also better able to keep it off. The restorative yoga group also lost more than 2.5 times the amount of subcutaneous fat as the stretch group."
